A look at two other projects that I’ll advance from the back to the front burners when Book 3 of the trilogy is published.
The Courtship of Divorce
The working title for the novel that may pick Shake’s story up following the third book of the trilogy. That’s right. A possible Book 4. If I write it, this is the book that will tell the long story I wrote back in 1978 that became the genesis for the trilogy. And so it would represent a kind of coming home for me, and for Shake, who had to go back to his childhood to have his story told.
The Collected Works of Mavis Hopgood
Mavis Hopgood is a retired Las Vegas showgirl who lives in a trailerhouse in the desert outside the Utah town of Torrey. That’s her Airstream there in the photo. She’s an old girl but still has the verve and flair of her long career. One thing she doesn’t mind you knowing is that she wears turtleshells in her bra for falsies. And another is that she’s my alter ego and a surprising writer in her own right. This is a book of poetry and prose she’s written over the years – some fun, some dead serious, some insane enough to leave you staring when she gives one of her sunset readings – that has either been published or was never sent out for publication. A Woman’s Ass is a Sometime Wondrous Moment. You Were Beautiful while it Lasted. The Collector. Thursday. Southbound. That You Will Awaken. Having Left Home Twice. City of Uncles. Death of a Refrigerator. Friends and fellow writers have harangued her for years to get them out there. So here they come. Don’t know when yet. But you’ll know when she does. She’s let me post some samples under “Some Fiction” and “Some Poetry.”
